A Better Visit 1.2.2

A Better Visit is designed to facilitate meaningful interactions between individuals living with dementia and their support networks through a thoughtfully curated selection of engaging activities. These small games focus on content creation and positive reinforcement, leveraging familiar sounds, visuals, and activities to evoke memories and enhance social interaction.

Suggested guidelines for optimal engagement include:

• Share the experience: While explanations may be necessary, strive to participate as equals. Encourage active involvement by demonstrating gameplay, guiding gently, fostering encouragement, and taking turns.
• Identify suitable activities: Acknowledge that certain games may not resonate with either participant on particular days. Listening to personal preferences and adjusting accordingly is essential.
• Practice flexibility and exploration: There is no singular approach to gameplay; completion of games is not obligatory. Focus on what benefits both participants' enjoyment or stimulates dialogue informed by visuals or music. Adapting the rules to foster engagement is encouraged.
• Encourage conversation: Pose one question at a time, allowing space for dialogue. Take initiative in sharing stories to invite reciprocal interaction.

A Better Visit is the result of collaboration among Dementia Australia, Lifeview Residential Care, and Swinburne University of Technology’s Future Self and Design Living Lab. The interactive games were developed through a co-creative process involving individuals with moderate to advanced dementia along with their visitors.
